![]() It wouldn’t need to have that clarification on every Spell Counter Card just a few that are likely to be seen first.Īlso, why is “Piercing Battle Damage” not just “Piercing Damage”? Maybe on a few cards that use Spell Counters and name it multiple times, the first instance could be written as “Spell Counter (SC)”, and then just use SC thereafter in the effect. Perhaps Spell Counter could be shortened to “SC”, like how Graveyard is GY. If Spell Counters are gonna be a whole thing for an entire archetype, they really need a way of shortening stuff down. “Cannot be targeted by your opponent’s card effects” could be “Untargetable (opponent’s cards)”.Įndymion brings up an interesting thought as well. Or maybe “if this is destroyed:”, if we need a subject.Īnd certain common effects could be shortened. ![]() Could that not be reduced to “if destroyed:”? It wouldn’t be a proper English sentence, but it would be enough to get the point across. I feel like there are some cases of making things overly wordy.įor instance “if this card is destroyed:”. Stuff like everything being inherently HOPT, for example. That said, I do appreciate how Rush Duels are taking advantage of being built from the ground up to implement simplifications that wouldn't be possible for the established TCG/OCG. Does it say you can only activate an effect once per turn, or can you only use it once per turn? Is it a soft OPT that allows other copies to also use their effect, or a hard OPT that only allows one copy to use its effect once? If a card has multiple effects, can you use all of them once in a single turn, or can you only activate one of them, once per turn? What if some of a card's effects are OPT, while others aren't? There's not just one flavor of OPT clause that can easily be packaged into one concise keyword. But there's so many different kinds of floating effects! Does it trigger off of being destroyed by effects? How about by battle? Or just by being sent to grave? Does it have to actually hit the graveyard to work? Does it have to be by your opponent's effect or attack, or can you trigger it yourself? Is it mandatory or optional? Does it say "If" or "When"? Does it have to be in your control when it is destroyed? Does it have to have been summoned properly first, or can you revive it/cheat it out and still benefit from floating? Hell, even both the cards you mentioned have floating effects. Nearly everybody will be running at least one monster that has an effect when destroyed. I feel like the major hurdle to introducing more keywords into the game is just how many different ways in which even similar effects can differ subtly from each other.įor example, floating effects. Hate to plug-in a video, too, but JWittz goes into detail of the problem pretty nicely. Maybe TCG could take a page from that somehow? Maybe shorten "You can only use this effect of "X" once per turn" to or something of the sort.Īlso, I like how OCG separate their effects with bulletins (①,②,③) for easier reading. A lot of bloat these days are from restrictions. TCG could implement the same with mill effects or some others. If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent. When this card attacks with an ATK that is higher than the DEF of your opponent's Defense Position monster, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points. ![]() I'm talking about how TCG handled phrases in the past like piercing and (Quick Effect) to shorten length. IDK, maybe its time Yugioh went the way with keywords like MTG or at the very least shorten some phrases? I'm not talking about using 1 word phrases to describe entire effects like "Scry" or "Trample" or what not. The most extreme examples of long text is " Cyberse Clock Dragon" (128 words) and " Endymion, tMMoM" (180+ words total, both Pendulum Effect and Monster Effect combined). I can't imagine what it's like for folk with not so great eye sight. A lot of this is due to power creep and translation issues, but it pains my eyes to see text ending up in size 4 font. I mentioned this in a hot-take thread several weeks ago, but effects these days are, well, really long. ![]()
